How do Christian mortgage loans differ from traditional borrowing? Learn about companies, lenders, brokers and more who serve faith-based customers.

Christian mortgage companies have expanded throughout the past 15 to 20 years in the United States, offering faith-based advice and loans to customers. These Christian lenders, brokers and loan companies offer customers a network of support for financial planning decisions such as buying a house, home refinancing, and more.

Christian Mortgages

Are Christian mortgages different from traditional plans offered by credit unions, national banks, and smaller local financial institutions? Not really. So why do people seek out Christian mortgage brokers and companies?

Faith and a desire for a network of like-minded people who understand that many Christians use their beliefs to guide daily decisions. For instance, when it comes to mortgage loans, what does the Bible say about borrowing?

Christian Financial Planning and Mortgage Companies

Many saved men follow the Bible in terms of providing for their families. As 1 Timothy 5:8 states, "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." Buying a house and having a helpmate to make it a home is part of living a good life. Christian financial planning and mortgage companies can help with living your faith. Living one's faith is part of following God's path.

Finding room in the budget for the tithe isn't even a consideration for most Christians—it comes first. As stated in Philippians 4:19, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

The Bible also says that "'Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit'—yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, 'If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that'” (James 4:13-15). Does this mean you shouldn't make financial planning decisions?

Christian Mortgage Brokers and Lenders

No. It means that when you meet with a Christian mortgage broker, your faith is first. Your debt to income ratio, for instance, will have to include your tithe; it's your debt to God. Non-Christian mortgage loans won't factor it in because it's not "official" debt, and you may overextend yourself and experience money troubles. This is one of many ways that Christian mortgage companies can help set you on the right path and act as a good financial steward.

Christian lenders will offer a variety of options that preserve your faith and your bank account. So how do you find these specialists? Ask around. Word of mouth is the best way to find the right help, but you will also find plenty of companies online. Research carefully, and read about companies that offer good interest rates or special deals for people with different levels of credit. Follow the news, read promotions and absorb all sources of information to make the right choice.
