If you're 60 and older and an Ohio resident, using your Ohio Buckeye Card can save you 10 percent or more at certain stores. Learn how to apply.

Getting old does, in fact, have some perks. Not many, but we take what we can get. Ohio residents who have reached the age of 60 and beyond can using the Ohio Buckeye Card to save 10 percent or more on groceries, clothing, home improvement goods, services, and so much more. Knowing how to get one of these discount cards in Ohio for seniors means shaving some of your expenses in retirement.

What is the Golden Buckeye Card?

The state of Ohio issues eligible residents a Golden Buckeye Card, a discount card that helps seniors and eligible non-seniors to save money on budget expenses. Eligible members include:

  • Ohio residents
  • Age 60 and beyond
  • Persons aged 18-59 with permanent disabilities

Card holders can then take the card and show it at participating retailers across the state to receive discounts. Some savings areas include:

  • Cars and transportation
  • Pet supplies
  • Health and wellness
  • Groceries
  • Restaurants
  • Movies and entertainment
  • Home improvement and services
  • Vacation and travel

Most discounts start at 10 percent, and many stores designate one day of the week (typically a Tuesday or Wednesday) for Golden Buckeye Card discounts to apply.

How to Apply for the Ohio Buckeye Card

All Ohio residents with a current driver's license, state ID, or who are current registered voters in the state automatically receive a mailing with their Ohio Buckeye Card enclosed after reaching their 60th birthday.

For persons who moved into the state after reaching the age of 60, those who do not possess an Ohio driver's license, ID, or are not registered to vote, or persons who are aged 18-59 and permanently disabled, requesting an application is simple. All senior centers and public libraries have them; just ask at the reception desks.

In addition, call (800) 422-1976 to request information about receiving your Golden Buckeye Card directly from the state government's Department of Aging.

How Much Can Seniors Save?

Managing retirement budgets can be a struggle, and sometimes an extra $50 or $100 per month makes a huge difference. Savvy seniors use the Buckeye card as a potent tool for making retirement dollars stretch just a little further.

For instance, if you need to buy groceries (and who doesn't?) at the Mustard Seed Market in Montrose, just outside of Akron, seniors save 10 percent on non-sale food every Wednesday with their card.

Buying home improvement supplies? R.B. Stout Garden Center in Bath gives 10 percent off every day.

The program extends through the entire state, with more than 20,000 retailers participating. To make your budget stretch, use coupons, discounts, and cards like this to find innovative ways to save. Carefully focusing in on all new savings strategies helps to cut spending where you can, so you can economize. Keep an eye out for any new strategy or opportunity that puts more money in your pocket.
