Reading comprehension is a critical, if not the most critical, skill for any adult in the working world. Sample GED Language Arts, Reading Test
The GED exam involves five sections:
- Language Arts, Reading
- Language Arts, Writing
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
Each section must be passed with a score of 410 or higher, and a combined score of 2250 is required to earn the GED diploma. For many students, the Language Arts Reading section can be a challenge, especially for those students who have fewer years of formal education. According to the American Council on Education, 71 percent of all GED exam takers finished 10th grade; 29 percent did not, leaving a wide range of reading abilities.

The Language Arts Reading GED includes questions on the following:
- Comprehension – 20 percent
- Application – 15 percent
- Analysis – 30 percent
- Synthesis – 35 percent
The section involves 40 questions, and students have 65 minutes to answer these questions. There are seven literary passages, with questions after, chosen from a variety of times and types of writing, including poetry, workplace documents, nonfiction, and fiction.
