Oklahoma has initiated a "cash for appliances" program, using more than $3.5 million in federal grant money from the 2009 stimulus funds. Like the "cash for clunkers" program for cars in 2009, the new program aims to convince consumers to trade in old refrigerators, clothes washers and more to buy new, energy-efficient models with appliance rebates of up to $250 per item. More than 23,000 rebates are expected to be issued as part of the Oklahoma Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program. Learn how to get one in this article.

Oklahoma Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program

The following items qualify, with the rebate listed:

  • Clothes washers - $200
  • Refrigerators - $200
  • Room air conditioners - $50
  • Water heaters - $100
  • Central air conditioners - $100
  • Gas furnaces - $100
  • Ground source heat pumps - $250
  • Air source heat pumps - $250

The Oklahoma Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program begins on May 8, 2010 for buyers, but there are some important requirements to qualify for these OK appliance rebates.

Cash for Clunkers Approach to Appliances

Like the Cash for Clunkers program for cars, the Cash for Appliances program offers significant savings, but only for participants who follow specific guidelines for this stimulus program. Some of the requirements to qualify for the Oklahoma Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program include:

  • Must be an Oklahoma resident
  • The appliance must replace an older appliance. Consumers cannot purchase a new appliance that does not replace an older, energy-inefficient model.
  • Consumer must provide proof that the older appliance was removed.
  • An Energy Star item must be purchased.
  • One rebate per appliance and a maximum of two rebates per household.

Please see the state's website for more specific details and for frequently asked questions.

Cash for Appliances and Energy Star Items

Unlike some states that require pre-registration to receive an appliance rebate, in Oklahoma consumers simply go to a participating appliance retailer (information will be listed on the Oklahoma Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program website before or by May 8, 2010) and ask whether the appliance rebate is still available. If yes, buyers can proceed and complete the requirements.

The cost savings for these items is significant, so consumers need to research available models and retailers to get the best deals. Look for promotions in newspapers, fliers, and online to find participating retailers in Oklahoma. In the end, the cash for appliances in OK program offers a double benefit: cash back on an appliance purchase and reduced energy bills.
